The Umeox Apollo Solar Powered Cell Phone – with Android The latest solar powered cell phone was just announced at Mobile World Congress in Spain, the Umeox Apollo. The phone runs on Android, and would take about 2.5 hours of sunlight for refilling the battery after daily use. This is great news if you want to go camping and not be without your smartphone. The phone is headed for production, but there is no word on when it will actually be available in the US. The phone could also be great for travelling. But for daily use, leaving your phone out in the sun for 2.5 hours at a time probably isn’t realistic. More likely, the phone would charge for 10-15 minutes throughout the day in between uses. In the event the phone goes completely dead, it would take up to 17 hours in the sun to charge it back. While it is great to be able to use the sun to charge your phone, even supplementally, there are things to consider. Like, will the solar panel get scratched up in your pocket or purse? Will the phone get damaged by extended exposure to sunlight? Maybe a solar powered removable case would be a better idea. Free iPAD vs Kindle

Samsung Korea just announced the development of two new image sensors for smartphones and other portable devices. Both emphasize low-light performance. The more capable 12-megapixel S5K3L1 is likewise back-illuminated and comes with an optional RGB-white color filter array. This reduces noise and brightens up the image by as much as 30 percent. It works with another logic chip that converts the RGB-white pattern to a more camera-like RGB Bayer for back-end compatibility. The larger sensors has the performance to record 1080p video at 60FPS.

China rejects accusations on Google hack, Internet freedom China on Monday dismissed accusations of any official involvement in hacking attacks on Google and other U.S. companies, adding to tension between the two countries over the issue. A Chinese official also defended online censorship of political topics and said the country would not change how it regulates the Internet, according to the official Xinhua news agency. Google has said it was hit by cyberattacks from China that caused the loss of intellectual property and were also aimed at accessing the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. Google cited the attacks, which hit at least 20 other large U.S. companies, as one reason it plans to stop censoring its Chinese search engine, even if that means closing its China offices. Google did not blame the Chinese government for the attacks, but U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called on China to investigate the claims. "Whether through explicit or implicit means, criticizing 'Chinese government participation in hacking attacks' is totally baseless," China's official Xinhua news agency cited a spokesperson for China's IT ministry as saying. "We resolutely oppose this." The Xinhua article quoting the ministry official was posted on the ministry's Web site. The official repeated previous government statements that Chinese law forbids hacking attacks and that the country is open to international cooperation to fight cybercrime. A spokesperson for China's State Council said the country's laws protect freedom of speech online but also forbid use of the Internet for acts such as subverting the government, destroying national unity or spreading porn or violent content, according to a separate Xinhua report. "China's handling of this harmful information according to the law has a full legal basis, and without a doubt is a totally separate issue from so-called 'restrictions on Internet freedom,'…
